HONEY WINE, NECTAR OF THE GODS

gif_trans.GIF (73 octets)

Honey wine is the fermentation of honey diluted in water, into which minerals and wine yeasts are added. The fermentation lasts approximately one month, and it is aged in oak barrels from three months to one year to refine the taste. The Bee Museum produces seven types of mead, from dry to sweet. We also produce a fruit mead, the Dégel d'Amour, made with cloudberries.

  • Alcoholic beverage whose origins are lost in the mist of time.
  • Beverage of the Greek gods.
  • The Gauls considered it a drink imparting strength and gaiety. (In "Asterix the Gaul," the druid uses it in the magic potion.)
  • The Franks believed that in their paradise, Walhalla, they would eat wild boar and drink mead served by virgin nymphs, the Valkyries, until drunk.
  • The Greeks called it ambrosia, from the word ambrotos : immortal.
  • The expression "honeymoon" comes from mead. In northern Europe, custom dictated that young couples should drink mead daily during the first moon following their marriage, hence, the expression, "honeymoon".

  • Mead was the preferred drink during the medieval period.
